Madison Keys Wins Bank of the West Classic Championship
07 Aug, 2017
Madison Keys (USA #21) defeats Coco Vandeweghe (USA #24) in straight sets: 7-6, 6-4 at the 2017 Bank of the West Classic. Sunday’s match, which pit the American duo against each other, is the 12th all-American final in the tournament’s history and first since Vandeweghe lost out to Serena Williams in 2012. Both Keys and Vandeweghe had never tasted success on home soil. Most recently, Keys achieved victory at Birmingham, whereas Vandeweghe won the final the previous week in Hertogenbosch.
This was a positive week for both players as Vandeweghe had yet to lose a set in the tournament and Keys had just one blemish in her opening match against Caroline Dolehide, in which she trailed by a set and a break. Prior to yesterday’s Final, Vandeweghe dropped serve just once this week leading the tournament with 20 aces.
Sharing hugs and laughs, the two Americans—friends since Fed Cup, were extremely friendly toward one another following the match.
